Class Constructed Grading Criteria for Personal Narrative

Good Personal Narratives:

Have a story that illustrates a complex theme
Have a theme a reader will care about
Support this theme with examples
Provide images/snapshots - readers can see what is in your mind's eye
Are full of details of setting (especially senses)
Are full of details of character (perhaps using a metaphor or dialogue to bring a character alive)
Show rather than tells (or just telling)
Give relatable experiences (or makes these experiences relatable through the story)
Provide enough background information
Have an organization strategy such as chronology, flashback, circle back etc.
Flow (uses transitions to walk the reader through the essay)
May use a gut punch ending
Use concrete action verbs, and concrete nouns and adjectives
Have combined short sentences with small ideas (unless these sentences are emphatic)
