Digital Storytelling In Lab 7

Creating Your Digital Story in the Lab

Since the computers in the labs automatically erase all files once a day, you cannot save your movie to the computer here. You’ll need to save it to your own hard drive or USB drive whenever you are done.

You’ll also need to make sure that you have all of your images, music, and sound clearly organized in a separate folder on your USB drive. That way you can easily access all of your materials for the digital story whenever you come into the lab. Imovie will freeze up and you will have to begin again if you try to have it pull files from different places (the desktop, email, your flashdrive); so save and organize everything on your flashdrive before creating yoru imovie.

Here is a step-by-step process (from Professor Erdeljon) to help you through.

1. On your USB drive:

  • Create a folder labeled “YOURTOPIC_digitalstory”
  • In this folder create three separate folders:

1.“YOURTOPIC_images” (put all images here, max size 720px X 480px)
2.“YOURTOPIC_audio” (put all audio in this file—music and voice)
3.“YOURTOPIC_movie” (leave empty for now)

2. Launch iMovie

  • Open a new project (click on the “+” sign) and title it “YOURTOPIC”
  • Set aspect ratio to standard, 4:3

3. Start making your movie by dragging files from your folder to the iMovie project.

4. When you’re done for the day:

  • Quit iMovie (the project will automatically be saved)
  • Go to the “Mac Lab Drive” and open it
  • Go to “Users” folder and click on the name of the account you’re using
  • Go to “Movies” and then “iMovie projects.” You should see “YOURTOPIC” there as a folder.
  • Drag the “YOURTOPIC” movie file to your USB drive and put it in the folder labeled “YOURTOPIC_movie”

6. To resume working on a project

  • Before launching iMovie, drag your “YOURTOPIC_movie” file from your USB drive to the Mac hard drive/ Users/ name of account your are using/ “Movies”/ “iMovie Projects” folder
  • Launch iMovie—you should see your movie appear as a project
  • Return to #3
