*Can you see the person? Do you need more description? Where? What details are too vague and can be replaced with more specifics details? What description did you think was most effective?

  • Do the details add up to a coherent portrait that either “takes downs” the person or is an affectionate but not sugar-coated portrayal? What details in the essay seem superfluous or unneeded?
  • Does the writer describe actions of the profiled in detail? Is so, where? Where may we have more description of actions?
  • Does the essay channel Ross’s voice? Which stylistic moves and sentence level choices make you feel like Ross could have written the piece? What other sentence-level choices can the writer make to approximate Ross’s style? In particular, is there anywhere in the essay where the writing doesn’t feel neutral, where the writer uses words like sweet or nice? Is there anywhere in the essay where we see what the writer is thinking not just what the writer is doing as s/he interacts with the subject? If yes to either of these sentences, discuss how to revise.
